PM Surya Ghar: net metering and bank loans explained

Two questions come up in almost every enquiry: how the bill changes, and how to pay for the system.

What net metering does

A net meter counts electricity in both directions: units you take from KSEB, and units your rooftop system sends to the grid. On your bill, the units you export are adjusted against the units you import.

Why you still get a bill

• Fixed charges and duties still apply every billing cycle.
• In the monsoon, cloudy days reduce generation, so imports can exceed exports.
• Night-time use always comes from the grid in an on-grid system.

How the net meter is installed

1. Your vendor installs and commissions the system.
2. Commissioning details and photos are uploaded on the PM Surya Ghar portal.
3. KSEB inspects the system and installs the net meter.
4. After the net meter is in place, the subsidy request moves forward.

Bank loans under PM Surya Ghar

The scheme links to collateral-free loans from public sector banks for residential rooftop systems, including systems up to 3 kW. Interest rates are linked to the RBI repo rate and differ between banks, so check the current rate with your bank.

• Apply through the loan option on the PM Surya Ghar portal or at your bank branch.
• You repay the loan in EMIs. The central subsidy is credited separately after installation.
• Keep your vendor's quotation ready, since the bank asks for it.

Is it worth it?

For homes with higher bills, the monthly saving can cover a large part of the loan EMI. After the loan is repaid, the saving stays with you for the rest of the system's life. Ask us for a calculation based on your own bill.
