Why LiFePO4 is the safest lithium battery for home backup
Not all lithium batteries are the same. For a battery that sits inside your home, chemistry matters.

Why safety favours LiFePO4
The iron phosphate cathode holds on to its oxygen much more strongly than NMC does. That makes LiFePO4 far less likely to overheat and catch fire if it is overcharged, damaged or used in a hot room. For a battery kept in a bedroom, hall or shop, that is the most important difference.
Why life favours LiFePO4
A home UPS in Kerala may charge and discharge every day during summer load-shedding or monsoon outages. A battery rated for thousands of cycles can run many years under that use. NMC trades some of that life for lighter weight, which matters in a phone but not on a wall at home.
What to look for on the label
- "LiFePO4" or "LFP" written as the chemistry
- Nominal voltage in multiples of 3.2 V per cell, such as 12.8 V, 25.6 V or 51.2 V
- A named BMS with protection for overcharge, over-discharge, temperature and short circuit
- BIS certification mark for lithium cells or batteries
